Everything the Christian calls themselves, they are calling Christ. A lot of people think self-deprecation is humility to God, but the Bible doesn’t describe Christians the way that Christians often describe themselves—as lowly, unworthy, and wicked. Instead, it places us on equal ground with Christ in nature.
For instance, Romans 8:29 says, “We are predestined to be conformed to the image of Jesus, the firstborn of many brothers.” That means Jesus wasn’t just showing off in His holy living, He was showing us what’s possible when the sons of God know who they are and walk like it.
1 John 4:17 says, “In this world, we are like Jesus.” Notice that it doesn’t put it off into some future afterlife, but says at this very moment, in this very world, God sees you the way he sees Christ.
2 Corinthians 5:21 tells us that Jesus became sin so that we could become the righteousness of God. You don’t just have righteousness. You are his righteousness.
You are created in the image of God, and you are one spirit with Him. Therefore, next time you’re tempted to insult yourself and you feel like God finds that kind of thing humble and pleasing, stop and think who you are really talking about.
